February 7, 1875

Boston Harbor freezes to such an extent that some 30,000 people venture onto the ice on foot, skates, and sleighs. Young Annie Thwing, her sister, and stepmother, are said to have driven by sleigh out from the beach at Savin Hill, around Spectacle Island to Fort Independence, before “looking into Squantum” and returning to Dorchester.
